Pre- vs Post-Workout Meals: What to Eat and When

The 30-minute panic about missing your anabolic window is mostly noise. Here's what actually matters before and after you train.

Walk into any gym in Delhi and you'll hear two competing panics: eating too close to a workout will make you sluggish, and not eating within 30 minutes of finishing will waste the session. Neither is quite right, and both make people overthink a decision that's actually pretty simple.

Before training, the goal is fuel without discomfort. If you're training 2-3 hours before, eat a normal meal with carbs and some protein — think roti-sabzi with dal, or a paneer wrap. If you're training within an hour of eating, keep it lighter: a banana, a handful of dates, or a small bowl of poha works better than a heavy, oily meal that'll sit in your stomach through your first set. Training on a completely empty stomach is fine for a light session but not ideal if you're lifting heavy — you'll usually perform worse and feel it by your second exercise.
